Since
the late 1960's, recording artists Sly Slick and Wicked have quietly,
yet overwhelmingly earned their place in music history as "The Kings
Of The Underground Oldies." Now, with the national CD releases of
"Confessin A Feeling Live" in 1996 (26 years after the recording
of the groupÍs first album) and the original "TonightÍs The Nite"
in 1999, this once obscure soul trio is no longer rhythm and blues
best kept secret. |

On tour with The Pacific Concert Group since 1993, Sly, Slick and
Wicked have performed coast to coast with their music reaching over
a half million fans in states such as Georgia, Texas, Colorado,
Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, California, North Carolina, Florida,
Pennsylvania and New York to name a few. The group has also gained
recognition in Europe and Japan.
Sly, Slick and
Wicked was founded in 1969 by Texas native Thomas Hawkins, aka Sonny
Daye. The group debuted in East Los Angeles with original members
Sonny Daye, Larry Lewis and Donny Everheart as part of a well known
circuit that promoted artists such as Mary Wells, Don Julian and
The Larks, Thee Midniters, Brenton Wood, Al Wilson and others. The
groups first big hit, Confessin' A Feeling (1972) was a song that
strongly connected with young lovers trying to express their feelings
toward each other. The song received immediate recognition and was
promoted heavily only on West Coast and Southwest radio stations
reaching a large Latino-Chicano audience. As expected, the love
of the Latino population has played an important role in the group's
success and has helped spark national airplay resulting in new fans
across the country.
During a radio
interview in Atlanta, lead singer Sonny Daye said "performing with
groups like the Delfonics, Blue Magic, The Moments, Barbara
Lynn, Peaches & Herb, Gene Chandler, The Intruders, The Manhattans,
Zapp & Roger, Bloodstone, and Deniece Williams
has made us feel terrific and has given us a long overdue recognition.
We are now ready to tour nationally and have been working on our
choreography as well as our repertoire of songs."
This release,
"Tonight's The Nite", is a collection of rare oldies that reveals
the artists who have influenced Sly Slick and Wicked throughout
their career. Early influences include Curtis Mayfield, Billy Stewart,
The Mighty Marvelows, The Impressions, Eddie Holman and Eugene Record
(original lead singer of the Chi-lites).
The title track
"Tonight's The Nite" is the original, rare and hard to find recording
from 1976 featuring Ron Crowder and Sonny Daye. Also of special
note is the unique falsetto style of singer Freddie Davis who is
the lead vocalist on "This Can't Be True" and on "Not On The Outside".
Also featured on this album is the original (OG) Larry Lewis with
his versions of "Me and You (You and I)" and "I'm Still
Here."
Finally, ITP
is proud of the founding Godfather of Sly, Slick and Wicked "Sonny
Daye" for his unique and special style of soul that is responsible
for placing the group in the hearts of so many fans. From all of
us at ITP, we hope you enjoy the great Sly,
Slick and Wicked sound!
